Birth Trauma Story Circle

Many births create an element of trauma – even healthy, ‘complication-free’ briths can have a massive impact on the birth parent, or any support persons who are present. We often do not talk about our story, or provided an edited down version of it to others. There may be gaps in your story that you don’t remember, or refuse to talk about. Often times, birth parents will relay that when they do talk about things, remarks such as “Well everyone does it, you are fine now, everything is good, or … oh that’s normal!” It can be hard to feel validated and to not feel judged for struggling with our story, and it can lead to some symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Sharing your story with others and being given the guidance and peer support in a nonjudgemental safe space is the greatest tool you can have in acceptance and moving forward in your life. It can also help to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, shame and guilt as you carry on in your parenting role.

Odyssey Wellness will be hosting a story circle group in Fall 2021 for any parents who feel they would like to share their story and gain some peer support from one another on this journey.
